Mahashweta -------- Sudha Murty

I finished reading a book by the author Sudha Murty, 'Mahashweta'. The author is well know for her work, positive activities, books & also for being a part of a well known IT company & hence needs no introduction. But I definately would like to put forth my veiw & opinion on her book, 'Mahashweta'.

I have read many of her books & have definately liked them but I got somehow impressed with this book.

The book tells us about a girl Anupama, who is very beautiful. She is talented & studies with the scholarships she gets every year & hence helping her poor father. She likes directing plays & herself is a good actor.herself. She is noticed both for her beauty & her talent by a young Dr. Anand who is from a rich family. He proposes marriage to Anupama in a traditional Indian way & they both get married. Dr. Anand leaves India to study abroad in a few months after marriage leaving Anupama with his mother & young sister. Anupama's mother - in - law did not like her much because she did not come from a rich family. In the course of time, there is a Laxmi Pooja in Diwali times & Anupama had to perform it. While she was told to bring hot coal for the prayer, a small piece of hot call falls on one of her foot & but she prefered not to tell her mother - in - law & sister - in - law. Once the wound healed she found out that there has been a white patch developing on the same place. One day, in pretext of meeting her friend, she leaves her house & visits a doctor, he diagnosis her patch to be leukoderma  unrelated to the wound due to the hot coal injury. She felt devastated as she knew that Leukoderma is a social stigma in India. Eventually her mother - in - law finds out & drives her out of the house. Her husband who is a doctor, knows about the illness, but does not support her. Anupama tries to contact her husband in various ways but he does not respond. She eventually becomes depressed & contemplates suicide. But with determination she comes to Mumbai & finds her way to the top. Here too she faces problems but despite them she becomes successful. Her husband realizes his mistake & felt guilty of not supporting his wife in the time of need, despite knowing that she developed the disease after marriage & despite taking vows to support her in all odds of life. When he comes back to take her after a few years, Anupama had been highly successful & now refuses to go back to him.

This story could be anybody's story. After reading the book I felt, why had she to suffer so much due a disease which can be curable & not contagious. Why did she not go back to her husband, who she had been wanting to since long despite his unjust behavior? Why did she not choose to go with another doctor who treats her when she meets with an accident, likes her despite her condition & proposes marriage after knowing Anupama's inner beauty?

Hope with the fast developing world, the people will also develop their thought process in a positive way.

Sudha Murty has written the book in which the emotions have been very nicely written & expressed. Read the book & the reader will then know.
